Student Day at the Capitol Immigrant Youth: Working Towards the Common Good
For all of you who have heard the
latest this week about immigration reform and higher education access, I hope
you tune into your media outlets regarding an amazing lobby day I witnessed at
the capitol.
Thousands of youth rallied for a
more fair system of higher education—a flat-rate tuition bill that would treat
immigrant youth equally to other youth.
Regardless of what your thoughts are
on immigration, you’ll have to admit—it’s a great day when young people go to
the state capitol to advocate for themselves on a key issue that impacts their
lives.
I heard these youth
speaking on the capitol steps about higher education, equal opportunity, and
economic prosperity. Ironically, these are the same youth who have been
dismissed, called “illegals”, etc…and today, you would have thought it was
Jefferson, Washington, Clinton (Hillary), or Obama at the capitol!
Wow, public policy shaped by a
diverse community—aiming towards the common good.
Today was a proud day for me, as a
Citizens League Board Member and Supporter of Immigrant Youths’ Talents and
Dreams.
